Bamboo Floor Installation

Bamboo floor installation is pretty similar to hardwood floor installation. If you know how to install regular hardwood floor, then you shouldn’t have a problem. If you don’t know much about, then you will be much safer hiring a contractor.

Don't take risks trying to do it yourself, if you are not familiar with the process. Sometimes the instructions about bamboo flooring installation are limited, or even missing. When you are following the right steps though, everything will be fine. See our previous page for general information about bamboo floors, and if you need more details, specific information, examples and pictures, check thebamboofloorguide.com

  • Before installing bamboo floors, allow the bamboo wood floors to acclimatize at home at least for one week
  • Clean well all the floors
  • Check for moisture on the surface you want to install the bamboo wood floors. The moisture levels should be between 40%-60%
  • Make sure all your floors are flat (or you will have problems when you start installing bamboo wood floors)
  • Choose your installation method depending on your level of expertise and type of floors. Staples tend to provide a more stable floor, while floating bamboo floors should be only wide or cross ply pieces
  • Snap lock bamboo floors (or click lock floors) are preferable if your flooring experience is limited if you plan to install the floors yourself. Important is to make sure that the area you are covering is not prone to moisture
  • The best bamboo flooring is on a few under layers
  • Glue floating floors only if you know how to do it well. Can be a risky job
  • Make sure that you get the recommended adhesive
  • Leave a proper expansion area, no matter what type of bamboo wood flooring you are using (different than the expansion area you need for laminate flooring)

Maintenance After Installing Bamboo Floors

You have beautiful a bamboo floor, and you are over the challenge with bamboo flooring installation. Well, what’s next? Maintenance! It is important, and really worth it, to learn how maintain your floors properly. Same as the bamboo floor installation, it is not much of a difference between maintaining regular hard wood floor and the bamboo one.
Here are the basics:

  • Clean with a hardwood floor cleaner (such as ZEP). Make sure that you are not leaving liquid on the floor and wipe well. Don’t use water because it may damage the finish
  • Vacuum often to remove dirt or sand that may scratch the bamboo floor surface
  • Spills happen; just clean them as fast as you can
  • Find attractive door mats and rugs to protect high traffic areas
  • Do not vary the room temperature too much
  • If you have heavy furniture, install protective pads on furniture legs
  • High heels are great anywhere else but on your new bamboo wood floors…
