If you are lucky to have a bamboo your garden, you may have noticed the beautiful, soothing sounds made by the leaves when is windy...

Bamboo is actually a type of grass, and can grow at an astonishing rate of 6 or more inches a day! There are more then 1,600 types of bamboo in the world, and some of them grow even faster - over one meter per day. Because it is one of the fastest growing plants in the world, bamboo is a highly sustainable resource.

What You Should Know

You can choose between horizontal floors (showing the natural growth rings), or vertical floors (with strips laid sideways, creating a different look). Over all, it is a matter of personal preference

Other options are natural or stained bamboo flooring. The natural color is lighter, and if you prefer a stained look, you have quite a few alternatives to choose from. It is preferable not to do the staining yourself.

For an unusual look, choose hand scraped bamboo, with a textured appearance, or strand bamboo for the strongest possible bamboo floor option

If you decide for darker, carbonized look, it is good to know that the carbonizing process makes the wood softer

Some types of bamboo wood floors will scratch, especially if you have pets (dogs)

In areas exposed to the sun, you might discover discoloration. A way to avoid this when you don't use blinds, is to cover the exposed area with a carpet or an area rug

After you purchased the flooring, allow a minimum of one adjustment week before you install it. This is because the temperature and humidity in your house is different compared with the one in the storage place of the store, and the floors may contract or expand

Solid bamboo flooring planks can be re-finished up to three times

The flooring can be installed over "in-floor" radiant heating

Be aware to avoid low quality bamboo. If possible, purchase ones that have been harvested from a plantation, and not from the forest (usually causing habitat damage)
