Drywall Finishing Tools,
Drywall Equipment & Drywall Materials

Here is a list with basic drywall finishing tools, or drywall equipment necessary if you want to achieve a quality drywall work by yourself. You will definitely need a few specific finishing tools, such as different sized taping knives, a pole sander for dry sanding, or even a wet sanding pad.

Sometimes, the best result is when you rent drywall equipment, such as a drywall vacuum sander system or even a sprayer designed to apply texture on ceilings.

Drywall Tools & Equipment

  • Measuring tape
  • Hammer for drywall nails
  • Utility knife
  • Drywall knifes
  • Inside drywall corner knife
  • Drywall saw
  • Hole saw (to cut round holes for pipes, pot lights)
  • Sanding pole
  • Sanding drywall paper and drywall screen
  • Cordless drill
  • Phillips bit with adjustable depth
  • Vacuum attachment for sanding, to reduce the amount of dust (remember to use it only with Shop Vac)
  • Expandable T-Jack tool, to hold the drywall
  • Drywall T-square, to cut the drywall

Beside drywall finishing tools, you need to buy a few specific drywall materials. Here is a the basic list of drywall materials you need to have before starting your project:

Materials You Need to Install Drywall

  • Ready drywall filler
  • Drywall screws (‘Grabbers’ are a great); drywall nails
  • Drywall paper tape
  • Drywall mesh tape
  • Metal or plastic corner beads
  • Plastic drywall guards (for finishing around the windows, to prevent moisture)
  • Spackle, tray and drywall knifes
  • Metal J-B for closet edges

Extra Drywall Finishing Tips

  • Always keep your tools and drywall equipment clean. To prevent rust, apply WD40
  • Use “ All Purpose” drywall filler(it is easier to use). A good drywall filler consistency is similar to smooth nut butter. Make sure that you are mixing well; for this you need a drywall mixer and electric drill
  • You may keep your drywall filler ‘fresh’, once mixed, by covering it with a layer of water. This will prevent drying. You have to remove the water before you re-use the drywall filler
  • Use three coats of filling on all joints and inside/ outside corners
  • Allow each layer to dry properly before applying next
  • You will know that you are done finishing the drywall, when the joins are not noticeable
  • Sometimes the second coats is not smooth; as soon as it dries, sand it fast and then apply the third coat
  • You must use a primer sealer before painting, and good quality ones, from paint stores, Rona or Home Depot
