The Paint Color Wheel
A color wheel will help you to figure out which colors will mix harmoniously, fit better for your exterior home painting, for example, and what combination to avoid. Similarly, a color palette will ease your interior painting decision, based on the same principle.
- The primary colors: red, blue and yellow are combined (in sets of two) to make three secondary colors. For example, red and yellow produce an orange; yellow and blue result in a green; red and blue combine to make a purple.
- Tertiary colors are a result of mixing a primary color with a secondary color.
- An interior design tool, a color wheel, shows a number of colors in a circle. The colors close to each other complement themselves well, while the opposites are great for creating contrasts.
- There are two types of colors: warm and cool. Warm colors are reds, oranges, yellows and browns. Cool colors are greens, blues and purples.
- Warm colors will make the room feel cozy and inviting, as well as absorbing more heat.
- Cool ones will make a room look bigger and brighter, especially if you are choosing a lighter shade. Additionally, they will help you relax and focus (think blue and green).
- Shades of white are giving you a sense of space, creating a good atmosphere to Zen-styled homes.
