What You Should Know
When You Plan Remodeling a House

Remodeling a house will always bring some degree of stress. If you are a pet owner, expect the amount of stress you will have to increase.. Longer the project, more potential challenges. What you can do to minimize this part is to plan well ahead, or find a company that is offering good home remodeling services.

Here are a few rules to remember when remodeling a house:

  • Keep it simple
  • Establish your budget
  • Look for quality materials
  • Research for ideas: online, magazines, friends
  • Hire contractors with good references about their home remodeling service. Don't hesitate to hire professionals when necessary: architects, electricians, and plumbers. A general contractor will save you time, and manage the entire project, including hiring all other contractors.
  • If you plan to do it yourself it is great; it will save you money, with one condition though: be honest when you estimate the time you need, your skills, and what to expect during the project. Don’t start before you are clear how to do it. The price you will pay will be too high
  • If you hire a contractor, ask for an estimate based on a job walk-through. Most contractors are offering free estimates. Don’t follow the new trend, asking for an ‘online estimate’. Recently, many people are asking for an estimate based just on a brief description of their project, and without asking the contractor to visit the site. This will be a sure setup for disappointments…
  • You want to save as much money as you can when planning remodeling a house, by cutting on home remodeling service - nothing wrong with that, but please be aware that some low prices and (or) estimates online can be inaccurate. Unfortunately, some contractors can, and will promise you everything you want to hear. If it sounds too good to be true, usually it is (not true). Most of the time, you get what you are paying for
  • Negotiate, but be reasonable: it is great to negotiate a good, fair price, but don’t try to cut corners too much and take advantage of the contractor. Yes, believe it or not, this is happening quite often. Most of the time we are told horror renovation and remodeling stories from the owner’s experience; the contractors have quite a few good ones too ;) If you value the home remodeling service received, reward it by paying the price you agreed for, without hassle or delays. Unfortunately, some prefer to use any possible reason to avoid the full payment. Integrity on both sides is the key.

Why are so many people interested in house remodeling?

Because is working as an investment. Remodeling a house can be – cost wise - moderate, expensive or very expensive. A good idea is to find out what returns you will get from your investment, as resale value: it is profitable or not.

Below are a few things to look into when considering a project:

  • Re-painting the whole house, for example, is usually not very expensive, and will give a good face-lift to any home. It is worth to do and, if you are planning to sell, choose neutral colors
  • Identify your target market; the type of remodeling must be directly related with it, in order to bring you a good profit
  • Bigger investments should depend on location: if yours is good, extensive work and expense such as adding an extra bedroom is justified because it will add value to the house
  • Don’t forget the neighborhood: how accessible it is, what future constructions are planned, good schools, shopping center nearby. This is also related with location; a good location and neighborhood really will pay off for your investment
