A subcontractor is usually an independent contractor. Hiring a subcontractor is a way to use specialized workers like plumbers and electricians, with specific knowledge, training and license in their field. While simply building something requires training and knowledge, people who are specialists better perform certain types of work.

If problems occur because of faulty work on the part of the subcontractor, usually the general contractor is held liable. This is the main reason why the general contractor will screen a potential new subcontractor and ask for solid references.

Bottom line, both parts, the subcontractor and the general contractor, are served well by a good working relationships with each other. For the general contractor, having a reliable subcontractor will allow him to finish jobs on time and on budget. On the other hand, a subcontractor with good references and reputation will find better opportunities for consistent work.
